mid-century modern madness

Ummm so maybe the guys are into March Madness, but not so much for us. We are thinking, Mid-Century Modern Madness! Our bracket has retro, vintage, unique architecture, clean lines, fun colors, stone, organic material and funky shapes all going to the Elite 8.

So we are totally in the theme of the 70's. We are hosting a 70's themed party this weekend, which we will give you the deets on next week... but this whole set up has got us thinking about mid-century decor. Think Palm Springs! We are hoping to achieve the same aura for our party as we cannot handle the whole "hippie" theme.

We love the look of mid-century pieces mixed with old and new. Please look at this first room. What is not to love? From the organic grasscloth wall coverings, to the oversized quatrefoil mirror. The colors? To die. Don't even get us started on the light fixture. This room is sure to win a bid to the Final Four. No?
David Jiminez has done it again! When I see these x-benches, I immediately think Jonathan Adler. The sleek architecture and bright white, with the gold and lush accents...this room is a slam dunk.

What do you know...another x-bench. How did that manage to make its way in here? Orange velvet chairs and holy statement lighting. This dining room screams Palm Springs.
{desire to inspire}
We are slightly obsessed with this room. We love the understated tones of the room to immediately lead your eyes to those amazing chairs. Basically everything from the Viceroy Hotel is droolworthy.
{the famous Viceroy hotel}
Yeah. Well of course, it wouldn't be Mid-Century Modern without an appearance Jonathan Adler. X-benches...snuck their way in. Again! We wouldn't have it any other way. We have never loved white walls so much!
{the Parker Hotel, designed by Jonathan Adler}
Love how the focal point of the room is that amazing structure above the fire place. Its reflective and asymmetrical and absolute perfection. It immediately draws your eyes above to the grand art deco chandelier. As you know, we love turquoise. Cannot go wrong.
Doesn't this room just make you feel like you are in the desert? I feel like we could walk out of that sliding door into 100 degree dry heat in Palm Springs. This room is the quintessential Palm Springs. We love the addition of the lucite chairs to the mix.
So to achieve this look affordably and quickly, we have selected a few items for you that are sure to throw you into the category of mid-century modern.

Statement lighting? Yes, please.

What is mid-century modern without an x-bench? As you all may or may not know, these benches are a tad pricey. So we found you a very affordable option with many choices of color from Ballard Designs.

Another fun ottoman option:
So obviously we are going to need white ceramic accessories to achieve our look.

Items made out of organic materials...which also happens to be an animal. Weird.
To top the look off...we are going to need some fun accent pillows.
Have a wonderful Thursday!

uno, dos, TRAYS!

Once upon a time, there lived an Hermes tray. It was beautifully coated in a soft yellow shade and adorned with only the fullest and most beautiful flowers and the funkiest of accessories. Then it made its way into my home. The end. No. Seriously. I have been drooling over this tray for a solid year now, after it was photographed out of Olivia Palermo's NYC pad. Since the cheapest one I could ever locate was pushing $500. We will have to settle for the look for less!

Here are some other budget friendly options for you tray adorers.

You can't get much closer to the real thing than this...
Uno
Dos
Trays!
Well, we have more than three options. So here are the rest. I included other colors as well if the bright yellowish/orange is not your thing.

Last but not least...this looks different, however, these trays are customizable. Any color, and personalization preference. I think this is an awesome option and for only $28! Cannot beat it.

monday musings: plate walls

We hope you all had a glorious weekend! Welcome back to the daily grind.

Plate walls. Once only used as an apparatus to hold consumables, plates have made a comeback in a major way. As decorative wall art. I was watching Sarah's House on HGTV this weekend, and she used brightly colored plates to dress up the walls, although she had a somewhat different take. She took 4 colorful plates and framed each of them in a shadow box. To the uneducated viewer, you would have no idea they were plates had she not mentioned it. It looked amazing and totally zhushed up the walls.

I have always dreamt of having my very own plate wall. It is such a cool way to display a variety of pieces from different time periods, styles and shapes. We totally love this idea and cannot wait to recreate it ourselves. Here are some pictures that have lit our fire.

OH. MY. That is all we can say. Gorg.
Love the punchy colors on the crisp white wall. Pops.

We love us some blue and white ceramics. What better way to display them than wall art?
Have to represent the monochromatic. The mixture of the glossy white and the grasscloth textured lampshades...to die for.

I am sure this looks familiar to everyone. We featured this kitchen a few weeks ago, because it is marvelous. This plate wall is too noteworthy to not include in this magnificent plate wall round up.
This would be so easy to recreate. Head over to Pier 1 immediately. They have birdie plates in every color under the sun. You will not be disappointed. Love this look paired with the rustic table.

As we have learned in today's lesson, plates are not just for dining. You will never look at plates the same again and for that, we are thankful.

Top o the morning to you. Happy St. Patty's day from S+S! We hope you are are celebrating all things Irish today and didn't forget to wear your green! We thought a traditional Shepherd's Pie would be sure to fulfill your Irish cravings. Enjoy!
Ingredients

For the potatoes:

  • 1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes
  • 1/4 cup half-and-half
  • 2 ounces unsalted butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 egg yolk

For the meat filling:

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced small
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground lamb
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons freshly chopped rosemary leaves
  • 1 teaspoon freshly chopped thyme leaves
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen English peas

Directions

Peel the potatoes and cut into 1/2-inch dice. Place in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Set over high heat, cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling, uncover, decrease the heat to maintain a simmer and cook until tender and easily crushed with tongs, approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Place the half-and-half and butter into a microwave-safe container and heat in the microwave until warmed through, about 35 seconds. Drain the potatoes in acolander and then return to the saucepan. Mash the potatoes and then add the half and half, butter, salt and pepper and continue tomash until smooth. Stir in the yolk until well combined.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
While the potatoes are cooking, prepare the filling. Place the canola oil into a 12-inch saute pan and set over medium high heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the onion and carrots and saute just until they begin to take on color, approximately 3 to 4 minutes. Add thegarlic and stir to combine. Add the lamb, salt and pepper and cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 3 minutes. Sprinkle the meat with the flour and toss to coat, continuing to cook for another minute. Add the tomato paste, chicken broth, Worcestershire, rosemary, thyme, and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer slowly 10 to 12 minutes or until the sauce is thickened slightly.
Add the corn and peas to the lamb mixture and spread evenly into an 11 by 7-inch glass baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes, starting around the edges to create a seal to prevent the mixture from bubbling up and smooth with a rubber spatula. Place on a parchment lined half sheet pan on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 25 minutes or just until the potatoes begin to brown. Remove to a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes before serving.

lamp shade: from blah...to aha!

As we spoke about before, I had a lampshade. A nice little grey lampshade. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the lampshade, it just wasn't cutting the mustard, so to speak. I decided this was my opportunity to give my lampshade a much needed face lift. This area shown below, is our entryway of our loft. It is somewhat awkwardly shaped, so a long console table fits the bill. I decided that a dramatic print would fit this area best.

I found this amazing fabric on a new favorite online store of mine, Mood Fabrics. Here is the fabulous fabric I chose, and 50% off. Score.

Here is the finished product. So easy to do. I might consider giving my other lampshades some plastic surgery in the near future. Just call me Dr. Lindsay.

So, next on the horizon. Need art work to accompany this arch in this entryway space. I am thinking a set of 6 pictures hung vertically in two lines. I think that will be super chic. The prints need to be colorful and eclectic. I am on the hunt, so let me know if you come across anything fabulous.  I originally had a vision of blowing up a black and white map and cutting the map into equal sections to be framed as a whole. Instead, I loved this arch and am fully committed into making it work. Also, this console table has a ledge on the bottom, I see a chrome garden stool in my near future.

candy striped walls

Happy Tuesday! On this grey and drab morning, we were looking for colorful and lively inspiration...we arrived at striped walls. There is something about things being striped. It adds a fun and whimsical touch that cannot be matched. Whether it is one wall, a ceiling, a floor, the entire room...we are totally into stripes. Here are some spaces that we thought might jazz up your Tuesday. Enjoy!

Ummm is this outdoor space not to die for? Love the floor to ceiling stripes and even matching striped drapery. The bright green contrasts with the harsh black and white stripes, just absolutely complete the space. Also, we need these lanterns. Like immediately.
Gorgeous subdued grey and white with pink accents? Yes, please.
Talk about candy striped walls. This room is it. Love the red velvet tufted chair. The chartreuse accessories are the absolute perfect compliments to these rich walls.
So I know we said walls, but how could we resist these amazing floors? Come on. Floors, walls, ceilings...oh my!
These convex mirrors make this room. It creates a certain illusion with the stripes...makes us feel like we are in another dimension. Almost as if we are in Being John Malkovich. We will also take 2 of these chairs. Love the accessories in this room.
Dear Domino, Please come back to us. We love the classic style of this room. Taupe and white striped walls are a win, win situation. The traditional embellishments and addition of black and gold in this room, just make it for us.
The local hospital's candy striper lives here, and we like it. This foyer is amazing. The furniture tones down the loudness of the room and completely ties everything together.
It is amazing what random accents can do to a room. If you took every wall hanging out of this room, it would look like a little girls room, and we wouldn't be the biggest fans. But the addition of all of these funky contrasting items, stylizes the room and we totally adore.
We love the harshness of these stripes in a small space such as the bathroom. This mirror and the beautiful containers are definitely something to obsess over. The decision to do only one wall with stripes in this bathroom, was the right one. We absolutely love.
