Favorite Room Feature: Fieldstone Hill Design

So for those of you who are not familiar with Darlene of Fieldstone Hill, prepare to be acquainted. We are not kidding, this girl is the Queen of Design Boards and we are just merely her subjects. She has a fantastic eye for mixing and matching patterns. Which we love. Obvi. Today she is sharing a clients space with us that she designed. Get ready to be amazed. Serious.

I am delighted to be sharing one of my favorite rooms on Sadie and Stella today. Thank you so much, Lindsay and Lindsay, for hosting me here. You are wonderful hostesses – I can tell already!

It is so nice to meet all of you. My name is {darlene}, and I am the owner and designer at Fieldstone Hill Design, and I blog at Fieldstone Hill. By day, my clients are adorable and needy and call me mommy {the "mom" word is strictly forbidden!}. By every-other-second-I-can-sneak-in, I love helping my other clients create spaces that are both beautiful and functional, and I especially love seeing the joy that comes after their spaces come to life.

Today, I want to share one of my favorite client projects with you. This room was designed for Edie, who writes the popular blog, Life In Grace. Last Christmas, Edie’s family lost their home and all of their home’s contents in a house fire. Their beautiful family was safe. And since that terrifying day, they have thrived and rebuilt on love and faith. And also, on some fun decorating!

When I first began working with Edie, the first room that she wanted to do was her girls' room that her two youngest would be sharing. She wanted a room that was stylish, fun and still very girly. We had a blast working on this room together.

After getting to know more about Edie's loves and style, as well as her practical needs for this space, I created a Vision Design Board for her girls' room to help Edie see the room's overall feel:
Edie and I had to be patient as her rebuilding process moved forward, but it was worth the wait. What a joy it has been to see her home come to life, and what a joy it has been to see my designs come to life in her home and help their family rebuild!
Here is her finished girls' room; and one of my Favorite Rooms!:
My Favorite features of this Favorite Room are:
  1. The coral and turquoise color scheme
  2. The fun X-benches
  3. The silk pale turquoise drapes
  4. The graphic zig-zag rug
  5. The nook between two closets where the blue-gelato colored dresser and a fun chandy sits
  6. The matching twin beds
It was a joy to create this space. Thank you so much Lindsay and Lindsay, for letting me join in for your Favorite Room Feature, and for letting me share one of my Favorite Rooms!

S+S Holiday Gift Guide: For the Man in Your Life

Ho, ho, ho. Seriously. Do you all ever find yourselves struggling over special gifts for that special man in your life? Same. Here. They are picky. They claim to have functional and simple needs. Well gals, their idea of "functional and simple" would be QUITE different than ours. Our idea of "functional and simple" would be any unnecessary item, with glitter and lots of gold. And lots of it. Practical, people. Practical. They want a cool, rugged, scientific, metal and feasible gift. Try to pack all of those requests into one nicely wrapped package. Well, well, well. Do we EVER have the Holiday Gift Guide for you: For the Man in Your Life.
1. Ok, what guy doesn't want a personalized piece of bar ware? We present to you, the monogrammed cocktail shaker. Men love anything chrome. This is a proven fact. Not to mention a personalized piece of chrome bar ware.
2. For the traditional, techie man in your life. The Makr leather iPad case. Obviously if the man in your life has the iPad, he is definitely into gadgets. He likes simple yet luxurious things. This is the case for him.
3. Super unique. Super. The wood iPhone cover. This is definitely an iPhone case you do not see everyday, folks. Again, another product for the classic techie man.
4. For the science geek in your life. The Phrenology Art Print. We love the muted colors in this piece. TOTALLY something you would have seen in an old science book teaching about lobotomies. Totally.
5. Every man needs a leather duffle to travel with in style. This leather duffle is sure to last through any and every fashion trend. This is an absolute classic piece and will look even better with age. Like a fine wine, gals. Again. Practical. Practical. Obvi this piece has a major return on investment. Gets better with age? They will love.
6. Hey, your man has got to keep warm in the frigid weather. Right? Why not this arctic scarf to do the trick? Equipped with manly grays, blacks and tans, this scarf cannot disappoint any man in your life. Traditional but also stylish.
7. Another great travel piece for that special guy. This dopp kit is the perfect piece to handle all of his most precious toiletries. I am sure they are extremely concerned with the safety of their toiletries in travel. Any how, this baby sure beats those Ziploc bags he has been carrying through the airport. Am I wrong?
8. For the sophisticated, modern, businessman in your life. Tiffany's cuff links. These are so gorg and also are available for personalization. This is such a unique and obviously thoughtful gift. Again, these will last a lifetime and are special because you monogrammed them. Girls, you are so thoughtful!
9. Last, but certainly not least, the ultimate shaving kit. This is for the man in your life who appreciates the finer and more historic things in life. Some men are completely fine with grabbing their Mach3 and a can of shaving cream and going to town. While others, totally appreciate the old school form of a good shave. For your guy? This will not disappoint.

monday musings: masculine spaces

Are you guys on turkey detox? Are you still in your fat pants from your Thursday feast? Yeah. Us too.

So we know what you all are thinking, we know you too well. "Masculine spaces??!?!?!?" Yes. Masculine spaces. When we ask you what first comes to mind when you think of a masculine designed space, what would it be? Ok. We will help you out. 1. Large flat screened TV. 2. Ceiling Fan. 3. Another Ceiling Fan. 4. Place to lay their crap. 5. Dude stuff. Ok. Let me address one subject. What is it with the man and his ceiling fan? We do not get it. Every client we work with it is the same conversation. Us: "What about a chandelier in the bedroom?" Client: "OMG I would LOOOOVEEE a chandelier in the bedroom...BUT my hubby will not budge on the fan." We almost don't ask anymore. Swear. This is an anomaly that we have come to terms with never solving. Ever. Boys are weird.

Anyway, not all masculine inspired spaces have to go the route you are envisioning. With applying dark, metals, organic and simple natural elements, we have ourselves a masculine space. Let's take a gander at some awesomely masculine spaces where we wouldn't mind laying our heads down at night.

As you are all FULLY aware, fully, we love black walls. Black lamp shades. Blackcents galore up in this space. We love how they incorporated the mixing and matching of different wood finishes, as well as, some elements from nature. Animal remains (sounds gross, we know). Ok, the cool turtle shell and the antlers of some sort. Glam it up with a chevron comforter.
Super tailored masculine space. Love the marriage of the blacks, greys and cognac. As you can see, a great usage of pattern in this room to create layers, yet it is still so simple. Not fussy. I will tell you what I am about to fuss about. That headboard. OMG. I would definitely take a ceiling fan for that headboard.
Mary MacDonald...you have done it again. Is there anything this woman cannot do? Leather accent wall adorned historic relics. A man's dream I tell you. Gorgeous dark and rich colors absolutely make this room.
Total modern masculine bedroom. We love how the beige color palette is complimented with all of these chrome glamorous touches. Ok, sorry guys. Manly touches. Clean lines in this room will definitely get the nod from any guy. Not to mention the overly cool light fixtures.
Another chromey masculine bedroom. Again we have the blackcents up in here. What guy wouldn't adore that? There is huge usage of blackcents in this space. Lighting, walls and the majority of the furniture. Super elegant, yet so manly.
I have adored this bedroom ever since the first time I laid eyes on it. This makes me think of some marvelous cottage in Vermont. The large black wooden framed bed is to die for. Not to mention the plaid accent. We cannot get enough of plaid lately. Also so dear, the 3 matching shields displayed on the wall. We die. Equestrian chic.
Adoring the striped walls. The vertical stripe gives the space a more masculine feel. Not to mention the soft color palette. The art chosen to adorn the wall definitely does the trick of making this space more gender specific. We love the use of simple elements here.
Like we could finish this post without incorporating antlers. Are you kidding?!?! This room is obviously cabin appropriate but we couldn't help but show it off. That rustic, reclaimed wood bed is absolutely insane. Nusto.

S+S chow: turkey and mashed potato potpies

Happy actual eve of Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday. You get all of the perks of the Christmas season, but all of the stress and pressure for the gift giving is not there. Amazing eats and amazing company to be thankful for. Another thing to be thankful for, a refrigerator full of leftovers. We are always left wondering what to do with all of the leftovers. Solution: turkey and mashed potato potpies. That's right. Pot. Pies. Yum. I mean lets get real, you had us at mashed potato. Here are the deets on this tasty take on leftovers. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you loves!
turkey and mashed potato potpies {via Martha}
Ingredients:
6 slices bacon, cut crosswise into 1-inch pieces
3 leeks (white and light-green parts only), halved lengthwise, rinsed well, and sliced (3 cups)
10 ounces button mushrooms, sliced (4 cups)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
Coarse salt and ground pepper
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 3/4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
3/4 pound leftover turkey meat, skin removed, cut into bite-size pieces (3 cups)
1 cup frozen peas
4 cups leftover mashed potatoes

  • Directions:
  • 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees, with rack in upper third. In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 8 to 10 minutes; with a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain. Add leeks, mushrooms, and thyme to skillet and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often, until vegetables are golden brown and softened, about 12 minutes. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and cook, stirring, until flour is pale golden, about 2 minutes. Stir in broth and simmer until thickened, 4 minutes. Stir in turkey, peas, and bacon. Season with salt and pepper.
  • 2. Transfer turkey mixture to eight broilerproof 8-ounce ramekins or a 2-quart baking dish; set on a rimmed baking sheet. Spread potatoes over turkey mixture. Bake until filling is bubbling and potatoes are golden in spots, 20 minutes.
  • 3.Heat broiler with rack in top position. Broil until potatoes are evenly golden, 2 to 3 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes

S+S Thanksgiving Tablescape

Happy two days before Thanksgiving lovelies! For those of you who are so bravely hosting Thanksgiving and are still pondering how to set your table, this post goes out to you. Have no fear. S+S is here. This year, we again found items around the house to set our table and you absolutely can do the same.

We had a remnant of multi-colored tweed fabric that has been sitting around the house at the ready to be used in our tablescape. Since it is a predominately brown tweed, we wanted to bring out some of the unexpected colors out of the color palette, like teal. We thought maybe another fun color to highlight out of this pattern would have been a bright turquoise. You can achieve this by using different colored napkins. To give our plates an even more dramatic effect, different shades of pheasant feathers were used. We think this gives the table an outdoorsy and seasonly appropriate feel.

We cannot ever get enough of our gold gilded chargers. We honestly try to stray from them and try something new. We come running back every time.

As for the centerpiece, we kept it simple. A wooden stump charger with mercury glass and birch candles. Again, a mix of glam and nature.
To highlight the plates, we thoughtfully placed metallic pumpkins at each place setting. Alternating gold and silver with each place setting gives each set a unique feel. Feel free to tie a pretty name tag off of the pumpkin to give it even more of a personal feel.
We hope we have given you some ideas for your Thanksgiving place setting. For those of you hosting a large family get together, just remember to breathe. Also, remember to send us your address and time of dinner so we can head on over. Happy eve, eve of Thanksgiving!
